How to compare quotes for a local job

Two quotes can cover different things even when they answer the same request. Before choosing, put the details side by side and ask about the gaps. The lowest total is only useful if you understand what it buys.

Give each provider the same brief

Use the same description, photos, measurements and deadline when asking for quotes. If you add another task or change a requirement during one conversation, update the others too. Otherwise you may be comparing different jobs.

Ask whether the amount is a fixed quote or an estimate, and what information the provider still needs. If a visit is necessary, agree whether that visit has a cost before arranging it.

Compare the included work

For each quote, check:

  • The tasks included and any work specifically excluded.
  • Who supplies materials, parts or equipment, and which items are specified.
  • Whether preparation, making good, cleaning up and waste removal are included where relevant.
  • The proposed start date and expected duration.
  • The total payable, including any stated taxes, travel or other charges.
  • When payment is expected and which payment method you are agreeing to use.

You can copy these points into a note and fill in one column per provider. A blank answer is a question to ask, rather than a reason to assume something is included. For any 8Job charges, check the current payment and fee information before confirming.

Ask about experience that fits your job

Look for information relevant to the work you need, such as similar services, a clear description of the provider's approach and examples they can explain. Ask about qualifications or insurance where relevant and clarify what any evidence covers.

An 8Job ID checked badge concerns a reviewed photo ID. It does not verify skills, qualifications or work quality. Read more about what the badge means.

Agree how changes will be handled

A job may reveal something that was not visible at the start. Ask the provider to explain any extra work, its price and the effect on timing before you agree to it. Record changes in the conversation, along with the revised scope and total.

A useful question is: “If you find something outside this quote, will you explain the options and additional cost before going ahead?” This gives both sides a clear point at which to pause and decide.

Confirm your choice in writing

Before the work begins, make sure the agreed tasks, materials, price, timing and payment arrangements are recorded together. Ask how the finished work will be checked and who to contact if something needs discussing afterwards.
